34 vehicles damaged in Niagara-on-the-Lake grass fire

A large grass fire in Niagara-on-the-Lake has damaged dozens of vehicles, causing over $1 million in damages.

The vehicles were parked in a grassy lot on Niagara Stone Rd. for Sunday’s Lavender Festival.

The cause of the fire has not been officially determined but it appears the hot underside of a vehicle parked on the dry hay field sparked the blaze.

A total of 19 cars, trucks and SUVs were destroyed and other 15 have some sort of damage.

No injuries were reported however some firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire chief had warned festival organizers about the potential fire risk.

“We were very clear that because of the dry conditions parking vehicles on a hay field is a significant fire potential. Unfortunately they chose to ignore our advice and this is what happened.”

Damage is estimated between $1.2 and $1.5 million.
