Halton police are searching for two suspects following a collision involving a stolen vehicle in Burlington Wednesday morning.

Halton police say the crash happened around 7:15 a.m. at the intersection of Guelph Line and Upper Middle Road.

A stolen Ford F-150 collided with another vehicle that police say appears to be connected to the stolen vehicle.

Police say two suspects from one of the vehicles involved in the collision brandished a knife and carjacked a civilian vehicle at the intersection.

“At that time there was a civilian vehicle there. That person was approached by one of the suspects who brandished a knife in order to carjack that vehicle. The civilian party that was in the car was punched and did sustain minor injuries, and that vehicle was taken. That vehicle being a silver Volkswagen Jetta,” Jeff Dillion of Halton police said.

The carjacking victim was taken to hospital after police say he was punched by the suspects.

“It’s going to be a very, very scary situation and we would obviously, unfortunately in the current circumstances involving vehicle thefts nowadays, to have people be vigilant and aware of their surroundings,” Dillion said.

Police were able to arrest three suspects at the scene.

Westbound Guelph Line remained closed at Upper Middle Road for around four hours while police continued to investigate.

The incident comes amid what has been described as a crisis in carjackings, with officials promising a crackdown.

“I’m done with these guys. They’re going to jail. I’m going to use every resource, every single tool,” Doug Ford told reporters on Jan. 31.

Correction: Halton police initially said there were four suspects involved, with one still outstanding. Investigators confirmed a day after the incident that five suspects were involved and two remain outstanding.
