Tilly Johnson has died

Tilly Johnson, who was a fixture at the Hamilton Farmer’s Market has died at the age of 90. She had a stroke last week, and died Friday night.

The Jamaican born Johnson came to Hamilton when she was 40. She began selling Caribbean food at the downtown Farmers’ Market in 1972. She retired just last year.

Johnson was a big believer in education, setting up a scholarship for students.   In 2002, McMaster University gave gave her an education award of her own: an honorary doctorate. In 2006, the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction inducted her as a member for being a community leader and successful entrepreneur.
