A 12-year-old boy received a special birthday delivery from Hamilton police Monday morning.

Kayla Penner says she received a call from her son, Lathium, while she was dropping off her other children at school shortly after 9 a.m.

“The amount of excitement when I picked up a call from Lathium saying, ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Police showed up, they gave me the donuts I wanted and said happy birthday’,” said Penner.

Penner says her son has an intellectual disability and has been on the hunt for the specialty donuts from Tim Hortons that are raising funds for the Special Olympics.

The #ChooseToInclude donuts were available for a limited time with all proceeds going directly to Special Olympics. The multi-coloured design was inspired by the themes of diversity and inclusion that are central to the Special Olympics mission.

On Sunday, Hamilton police posted on Twitter encouraging residents to visit their local Tim Hortons to support the fundraiser.

Penner saw the post and responded that her local Tim’s was always out of stock and she had hoped to track one down for her son’s birthday on Sunday but was unsuccessful.

Hamilton police Cst. Indy Bharaj saw the post early Monday and contacted the Tim Horton’s at 257 Main St. East.

Bharaj said he was told the campaign had ended on Sunday and the donuts were no longer being sold. He says the staff offered to make a special batch, just for Lathium.

Bharaj and three ACTION officers then delivered the donuts to the young teen as a special belated birthday present.

“When the officers arrived at the house, he was super excited they came for him,” said Penner. “He was excited just to chat to the officers and they wished him a happy birthday and of course, he got the donuts he wanted.”

She said Lathium couldn’t stop talking about the special visit, saying it was the best day ever and one he will never forget.
