12 Hamilton Mountain homes evacuated after nearby natural gas leak

Residents of a dozen homes on Hamilton Mountain had to evacuate Thursday morning following a major natural gas leak.

Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says crews arrived at the scene in the area of East 15th St. and Brucedale Ave. East shortly after 9 a.m.

It was determined that workers excavating in a church parking lot struck a four-inch gas main and caused a break in the line.

Enbridge Gas crews are currently working to isolate the leak, leading to road closures in the area.

An HSR bus was also brought in for evacuees to take shelter from the heat.

There is no concern for public safety at this time.
