NRPS phone number being spoofed in tax scam

The Niagara Regional Police Service have been getting complaints from residents that are being targeted by an ongoing tax scam. The suspects are spoofing caller ID so the victims think it is the NRPS calling.
Initially, victims have been receiving phone calls from people claiming to work for the Canada Revenue Agency. They have been told that they have an outstanding tax balance that, if not paid immediately, will result in their arrest. If payment is not made after the initial phone call where the suspects are pretending to be the CRA, then the victims receive the call where the suspect claims to be the NRPS. The phone number being displayed during that call is 905-688-4111.
The caller says they are an officer with the Niagara Regional Police, claiming a complaint from the Canada Revenue Agency has been received and a warrant for the victim’s arrest has been issued. The phony police officer will threaten to arrest the victim if funds are not sent immediately.
Police are asking that you verify the call before providing any information or money. Call the CRA and verify with them that money is owed. The CRA will not ask for payment using money transfer services such as Western Union, Money Gram or e-transfers to an email address. As well, Niagara Regional Police Service does not contact anyone to collect outstanding taxes, nor do they use money transfer services.
