New Caledonia development faces land claim dispute

Another land claims dispute is heating up in Caledonia, just a short distance from the former, failed Douglas Creek Estates.

A notice sent out by Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs saying they are unanimously opposed to a new development in Caledonia. They have been opposed for some time but now the developer is in court seeking an injunction to prevent any action by Six Nations groups.

The developer “Empire Communities” says on its website that its new neighbourhood “Avalon” is coming to Caledonia this March with 3 000 homes on more than 500 acres at McClung road and Haldimand road 66.

There’s already a show home on the site, the problem is that Six Nations Confederacy Chiefs have been voicing their opposition for a year and a half, they say they weren’t consulted.

Avalon is just a few kilometres away from the former Douglas Creek Estates, where protests became volatile about 10 years ago over a similar land claim dispute. Douglas Creek was never developed.

Six Nations says the province should be negotiating; not the developer. An injunction notice is posted to the door of the show home, warning Haudenosaunee against trespassing. Another notice reports that the Avalon office is closed to the public.
