Just over a thousand Syrian refugees have arrived in the country to date and with only a few weeks left until the end of the year, the push is on for the Federal Government to reach its target of 10 000 Syrian refugees.

Federal Immigration Minister, John McCallum is now calling on Corporate Canada to step up and raise $50 million in support of the resettlement program.

The Liberals say they are working hard to meet their goal of welcoming 25 000 refugees by the end of February.

The Federal Government has put up $700 million towards the resettlement of Syrian refugees. They are urging Canadians to contribute anyway possible.

Most recently, Canadian National Railway pledged $5 million towards finding affordable, stable housing for refugees. Through its own settlement program, Ikea Canada donated up to $180 thousand worth of home furnishings.

According to the Immigrants Working Centre, the cost of hosting a family of 4 for one year is roughly $27 000.

The Centre has partnered up with McMaster University to bring 20 Syrian refugee families to Canada.

The Federal Government says another plane carrying over 200 refugees is expected to land at Toronto’s Pearson Airport with dozens more arriving in the coming weeks.
