Ten years ago Monday, Michael Leshner and Michael Stark became Canada’s first legally married same-sex couple.

They believe the battle to have their marriage recognized in court has made it easier for today’s LGBT community to feel accepted. Their quick civil ceremony in Toronto came just hours after Ontario’s Court of Appeal pronounced the Canadian law on traditional marriage unconstitutional. Many other provinces followed Ontario’s precedent soon after.
