1 taken to hospital after overnight apartment fire in Hamilton

One woman has been taken to hospital following a fire at a Hamilton apartment that closed a stretch of Bay Street early Wednesday morning.
Officials with Hamilton Fire say the fire began on the first floor of the building located on Bay Street South before spreading to the second floor and knocking out power to the building.
Crews say they discovered the fire on the exterior of the building under renovations that spread to the interior of a unit through some exposed pipe chases.
Fire officials say that a partial evacuation was completed and an HSR bus remained on scene for those evacuated.
Paramedics say one woman in her 50’s has been taken to hospital in stable condition.
There have been no other injuries reported in connection with the fire at this time.
The fire shut down Bay Street between Hunter and Jackson before the scene was cleared by fire officials around 3:30 Wednesday morning.
Damages are estimated to be $650,000 for the building and $50,000 to the apartment that the fire first began.
