1 seriously injured, impaired driver charged in Niagara Falls crash

An impaired driver has been arrested and charged following a two-vehicle collision in Niagara Falls Wednesday night that sent one person to hospital with serious injuries.
Officers responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Lundy’s Lane and Highland Ave. after a Dodge Durango collided with a Hyundai when they failed to stop at a traffic light.
The impact caused both vehicles to roll, with the Hyundai knocking down the stoplight. Roads in the area were closed for an investigation but have since reopened.
The driver of the Hyundai identified as a 33-year-old man from Niagara Falls was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The driver of the Durango initially told police they were the passenger of the vehicle and that the driver had fled.
It was then determined that the driver was impaired after investigators consulted witnesses, the driver and Niagara police’s Real Time Operation Centre.
Thirty-one-year-old Derek Joseph Horth of Manitoba has been arrested and charged with impaired operation above the legal blood alcohol limit and impaired operation causing bodily harm.
Horth is scheduled to appear for a video bail hearing in St. Catharines Thursday.
