Ontario’s top police watchdog is investigating after one person is in custody after reports of a person with a firearm sent Sheridan College’s Oakville campus into lockdown on Tuesday.

The Special Investigations Unit says they first received reports of a carjacking in the area of Eighth Line and Kestell Blvd.

SIU says the man fled and was involved in a collision in the area of Trafalgar Rd. and Ceremonial Dr, after which the suspect fled on foot.

A police service dog was able to locate the man in the yard of a home in the area of McCraney St. East where an officer fired an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield at the suspect.

He was arrested and taken to hospital with non-serious injuries.

In a social media statement released around 3:15 p.m., Halton police warned of a heavy police presence in the area of Sheridan College’s Oakville campus as they responded to reports of a person with a firearm on the college campus.

The school remained in lockdown until the suspect was detained around 3:20 pm.

The SIU has since invoked its mandate and is investigating the incident.

In a statement released by Sheridan, the college says it enacted its active assailant procedure once they were notified of the situation by Halton police.

The school remained closed for the remainder of the day Tuesday as officers continued to investigate the incident. The campus has since reopened and classes have resumed as scheduled.

Counselling has been made available to all students through the school’s health services.
