Hamilton Police have a man in custody in a three vehicle crash with a stolen pickup truck that injured several people before he carjacked a taxi, injuring the cab driver.

Just after 9:30 last night a stolen pick-up collided with two other vehicles, causing one to hit a utility pole near the intersection of Upper James and Stone Church. Five people were sent to hospital including two young children. A 37-year old woman and one of the children remain in hospital this morning, but they are both expected to make complete recoveries.

Police say the driver of the stolen pick-up then ran to a nearby Tim Hortons where he stole a Blue Line cab. The taxi driver suffered minor injuries as she tried to stop the theft. The cab was subsequently abandoned at the Fiesta Mall in Stoney Creek.

Investigators will be examining footage from the taxi’s video camera.

The person under arrest is in hospital under police guard.
