Canada’s health agency releases new HPV vaccination guidelines

First Published:

New guidelines are being recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada for HPV vaccines.

The country’s immunization committee is now recommending one dose, not two, of the HPV vaccine for children and teens between the ages of nine and 20.

The health organization says research shows one dose is highly effective in providing protection against HPV infection and disease.

Other countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, have already adopted this vaccine model.

HPV is very common in Canada, with the health agency saying “without vaccination, it is estimated that 75 per cent of people in Canada will acquire an HPV infection in their lifetime.”

Two doses of the vaccine are still being recommended for those aged 21 to 26.
