Cake is a drama directed by Daniel Barnz (Won’t Back Down). The film stars Jennifer Aniston and a large supporting cast that includes Adriana Barraza, Mamie Gummer, Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Chris Messina, Lucy Punch, Britt Robertson, Anna Kendrick, and Sam Worthington.

In her strongest and most challenging role to date, Jennifer Aniston stars as the acerbic and hilarious Claire Simmons, who becomes fascinated by the suicide of Nina (Anna Kendrick), a woman in her chronic pain support group. As she uncovers the details of Nina’s suicide and develops a poignant relationship with Nina’s husband (Sam Worthington), Claire also grapples with her own very raw personal tragedy.

Cake had its premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival where it played in the Special Presentations programme. Aniston has received plaudits for her performance as a sarcastic chronic pain sufferer, earning her acting nominations for the Critic’s Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In what was always going to be a small but competitive field this award season (with Julianne Moore winning the Critic’s Choice and Golden Globes in Aniston’s categories), she missed out on a leading actress Academy Award nomination. But the Friends alumni has definitely proved that she’s ready to move away from comedy and take on some dramatic fair.

Cake is rated 14A.
