Burlington resident nearly loses $9,000 to ‘grandparent scam’

A resident in Burlington narrowly avoided losing $9,000 on Monday when police interrupted a scam in progress.
Halton Regional Police attended a residence in Burlington after learning of a “grandparent scam” in progress.
The victim called police once she suspected a fraudulent situation.

Officers responded to the home and were able to make an arrest nearby.
Kevin Murenzi, 24, of Gatineau, Que. was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000 and obstruction of a peace officer.
Murenzi was in the area with the intent to collect $9,000 cash from the victim for the fabricated and alleged bail of her child.
This scam is a type of fraud that has been an ongoing trend across Halton resulting in many community members being victimized. This is a theme often used by fraudsters throughout the GTA.
Investigators are asking anyone who has information or may have also been victimized to contact the Regional Fraud Unit – Intake Office at 905-825-4777 ext. 8741.
