Burlington man held in Indonesia

A 45-year-old Burlington man is behind bars tonight in Indonesia and has been held by police for almost a week without charge.

Neil Bantleman is a teacher in that country and he’s being investigated after a student accused him of sexual assault, but after a full week behind bars, charges have not been laid.

It’s been a long, tough week for Bantleman. Last Monday, his brother, Neil, was taken into custody by police in Jakarta who are looking into allegations he sexually assaulted students at the Jakarta International School and was taped by the principal.

“There is no video because there was no incident. They have fully co-operated with police,” said his brother.

Neil and his wife, Tracy, moved to Indonesia to teach. He was the vice-president of the school. At a news conference last week, Tracy tearfully proclaimed her husband innocence.

“Neil is the most loving, gently person you could ever meet,” she said.

According to police, students have accused Bantleman of sexually assaulting them. But Guy has no doubt his brother is innocent and says his being held without any charges being laid is not right.

“This is about protecting human rights and his human rights in this process. Being held not being formally charged… no evidence being provided,” said Bantleman.

The family wants him released while police continue their investigation.

According to Indonesian law, police are allowed to detain a suspect for 20 days without charge and can extend that for another 20 days.

About 2,600 students attend the school. Many are children of diplomats, ministers and executives.
