Blu-Ray Review // Gone Girl

The psychological thriller dissects the marriage of the perfect couple, Amy (Rosamond Pike) and Nick (Ben Affleck) Dunne. When Amy goes missing without a trace, Nick is the prime suspect in what the cops believe is a homicide. As the search for the missing woman makes headlines across the nation, its her turbulent marriage that becomes the real focus of media and law enforcement. Gone Girl is directed by David Fincher (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and is based on the best selling novel by Gillian Flynn. The casting in this one is superb. Rosamond Pike received a well deserved Oscar nod for her role as the duplicitous Amy. Truthfully, the thing I probably liked most about this movie is how it features wonderful performances from three dynamic female characters. Carrie Coon as Nick’s sharp tongued, witty twin sister and Kim Dickens as the smart, inquisitive Detective Rhonda Boney round out the trio. The male cast is also in top form, Affleck is spot on as the handsome, charming and yet easily disliked Nick. The film also gives Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris a chance to perform in atypical roles for the comedic actors. Perry costars as legendary defense attorney Tanner Bolt while Harris plays Desi Collings, one of Amy’s old flames.
Gone Girl is a great film. Fincher does a masterful job bring the story from book to screen – Flynn adapting her own novel probably had something to do with that. Adaptation aside, every element of the film works to further the tone of the story and keep viewers engaged. Its an eerie ride but one worth taking.
There’s just one special feature on the Blu-ray itself, an audio commentary by the director where he talks about casting, location scouting and offers some anecdotes from the shoot. The real draw to purchase the BluRay comes in the form of a 36 page children’s book, Amazing Amy Tattle Tale.
Within the fictional world of Gone Girl, the Amazing Amy children’s books play a pivotal part in Amy Dunne’s life. She was after all the inspiration for the character created by her author parents, Rand and Marybeth Elliot. Fans of the film and the novel can now own an Amazing Amy book of their own, “Tattle Tale”, which is only available with the purchase of the Gone Girl Blu-ray.
The Blu-ray of Gone Girl also comes with a digital download so you can enjoy the film on all your digital devices.
Gone Girl is currently available on Blu-Ray and DVD. It is rated 14A.
