Ontario Provincial Police say a man who discharged a firearm at officers in Six Nations of the Grand River overnight has been taken into custody and transported to hospital.

OPP were called in around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to assist the Six Nations Police Service who were dealing with an active weapons investigation on Chiefswood Road between Fifth and Six Line in Ohsweken.

Officers confirmed that a 40-year-old man had barricaded himself and fired a gun at police.

Nearby residents were told to shelter in place and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

Police later broke through the front door of the man’s home and he got out. Officers say he was then struck multiple times during an exchange of gunfire with police.

In a social media update, Sgt. Ed Sanchuk says the incident was resolved shortly before 9:30 a.m.

He says no one was injured as a result of the incident.

While the shelter in place has been lifted for residents in the area, Chiefswood Road between Fifth and Six Line remains closed for a police investigation. Six Nations Police Service Staff Sgt. Derek Anderson says the area could be closed for “up to a couple of days.”

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate.
