The film follows Aunjanue Ellis as Isabel Wilkerson, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism, as she researches and writes her 2020 book Caste: The Origins Of Our Discontents.

In the work, Wilkerson travels to Germany and India to research the origins of social and racial hierarchies as a way to examine racism in the United States.
