August: Osage County

August: Osage County is the newest film by director John Wells. Mainly known for his work in television, Wells puts together a dynamite cast for August: Osage County, his first feature film since 2011’s The Company Men. Written by Tracy Letts, the film is based on his 2008 Pulitzer Prize winning play by the same name. It follows three sisters from the Weston family (Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis, and Julianne Nicholson), who return to their childhood home in Oklahoma after their father goes missing.
The dysfunctional family attempts to make it through the crisis despite the growing unpredictability of their drug-addled matriarch, played by Meryl Streep. With a powerhouse ensemble and strong pedigree behind the camera, the film looks to be a great choice for fans of world-class acting and razor-sharp dialogue. That said, this film has divided critics so far. Some found the cast’s performances over the top, while others really enjoyed the bombastic characters. If you’ve got a crazy family, you’ll probably get a kick out of it.
August: Osage County stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more, and is rated 14A. For more on the film, check out our review.
