Hamilton Police launched their month-long firearms amnesty program today.

It will run until May 2nd and will allow people to turn in any unwanted firearms. Police say all possession or storage offences will be overlooked, in order to get rid of firearms in the city.

Acting Inspector Paul Evans says you can call 905-818-9656 and arrange for your guns to be picked up.

“Anybody who has firearms please do not come to any station, don’t drop them off or transport them to any station. We will come to you.”

“For the convenience of the program and convenience working around their schedules, call into our amnesty phone line and what we will do is have an officer schedule a pick up at their convenience and come get the firearms and it’s stress free.”

In 2006 Hamilton Police ran a similar program; more than a thousand guns were safely destroyed.
