Push for updated health curriculum
The Ontario Physical and Health Education Association is pushing for an update to the province’s health curriculum.
A proposal for a new curriculum was presented in 2010 but it was never implemented. That means Ontario’s is the oldest in the country – 15 years old.
The OPHEA wants an update for the 2013 school year with a focus on mental and sexual health. Vice-president Lori Lukinuk says these fields have changed a lot lately and what kids are learning in school doesn’t reflect that.
“This curriculum is going to help students who are at risk and other students to deal with issues, to be able to talk about issues that they otherwise may not have the opportunity to do so, in a trained and a safe place where they can do it.”
They want the government to pass the health curriculum that was proposed in 2010 so Ontario can catch up to other provinces.
