A week of family fun

March Break is officially here, and for those families staying in town there are plenty of options to keep the kids busy.

Today was actually a great kick off to the start of the break: the weather was mild and the sun was shining. We saw tons of kids out and about having a great time.

First up: the Hamilton-Burlington SPCA discovery kids camp. It’s an animal extravaganza – five days of educational activities based around our favourite furry creatures.

The HBSCPA’s Tania Celik-Sonne explains: “Things that we try and stress here is how to safely meet animals, and how to choose the right animal for our lifestyle and your family.”

Today’s theme was working animals, including a visit from an ex-racing greyhound and seeing-eye dogs.

Counsellor Charlie Campbell: “I think it really teaches compassion towards the animals. It gives a little bit of perspective about how they should treat animals throughout their life.”

At Eastgate Square safari science is putting on daily live interactive animal shows. The main attraction today: snakes, snakes and more snakes.

“Have you ever held a snake before?”

“Yeah, I have. Feels like rubber”

Eastgate marketing director Barbara Miele: “We’re really interested in servicing our community and this is one way to do it to make sure the children in our community enjoy their March Break and they do it so its affordable for parents.”

The event is totally free and runs twice a day.

“It was really good. They were very good with the kids got them very interested. Very funny.”

So the theme of this March Break seems to be animals and if you come to Bronte Creek Provincial Park you can ride for only $3. Admission is $16 per car. Once inside the park, you can have a guided tour of maple lane and even make your own maple syrup and sugar.

“I learned how to make how they made maple syrup a long time ago.”

Keep in mind, the temperature is set to drop on Thursday – so prepare yourself for the outdoor events!
