How to head off flooding

The city of Hamilton and surrounding areas are expecting record precipitation.
A storm system is expected to dump anywhere from 25-30 mm of rain tomorrow. That, coupled with melting snow due to milder temperatures, means a greater risk of flooding.
Experts like Sam Montecristo of Omni Basement Systems say it’s important to be proactive in order to avoid a flood in your basement. Start by taking inventory of your property.
“Do a walk around of the property, make sure the walkways are clear of snow around the foundation and making sure swails are properly maintained. Elevate belongings or move them to a different level of your home. Install shelving.”
Homeowners should keep the sewers around their home free of ice and snow so water has someplace to go, and remember to uncover nearby fire hydrants.
“Homeowners should ensure that their sump pump and water valves work properly,” says Montecristo.
He also says every basement should have a sump pump but one thing should be kept in mind: “These pumps do not run on their own, they run on electricity so having a battery back up system will help.”
