Chinese New Year doesn’t technically start for another two weeks, but that didn’t stop hundreds of Hamiltonians from coming out to celebrate this afternoon. There were plenty of performers to watch, but the star of the show was definitely Lincoln the police horse.

He showed up to help celebrate, but unfortunately had to stay outside.

He was there, of course, because January 31st marks the start of the Year of the Horse. It’s supposed to bring speedy success, and unexpected adventure.

Today’s celebration brought Canada’s only Chinese Senator to Hamilton. Victor Oh, along with Police Chief Glenn De Caire and Mayor Bob Bratina wished Hamiltonians “Kung Hei Fat Choy.

Speeches were followed by a showcase of musicians and dancers performing to traditional Chinese music.

In addition to being a time of celebration and renewal, Chinese New Year is a time for family.

Many Hamiltonians will be celebrating again on the 31st with a special meal.
