Coping with the deep freeze

For the second consecutive day much of Canada – including all of Southern Ontario – is gripped in a deep freeze causing public health units to maintain cold weather alerts.
In many communities including Toronto, Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions, temperatures dipped below minus 20, feeling like minus 30 with the wind chill.
Everyone is reminded that exposed flesh can freeze within minutes, so it’s recommended to limit the time spent outside for both people and pets.
Cold-related injuries can be avoided by covering exposed skin; wearing a hat, because up to 40 per cent of body heat loss can occur through the head; and wearing gloves or mittens; and a scarf to protect the chin, lips, and cheeks.
The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends keeping children indoors if the temperature falls below minus 25 celsius.
