The Rotary Club of Hamilton along with about 100 volunteers served food, distributed gifts and provided entertainment today for more than 600 students at Cathy Wever public school in Hamilton.
Several volunteer entertainers helped the annual Rotary Children’s Christmas Celebration transform the gym at the Wentworth St N school into a magical and exciting place.
Principal Paul Denomme told CHCH News, ”the importance of today is coming together as a community of learners, coming together in celebrating each other and celebrating our successes; also working together with our community here at Cathy Wever and celebrating with them all of the great things that we have done.”
In addition to a visit from Santa, everyone at the school received a goodie bag that includes gloves, a new book, and and a few small toys. A program at the St Leonard’s Society awarded 15 families a home computer through its computer rehabilitation program.
An army of volunteers helped to dish out a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings to all 600 kids.
Alex Moroz of Rotary: ”We’ve been very focused on doing something on the inner-city with kids for years and sort of adopted Cathy Wever School over the last number of years and this is sort of a good thing for the kids but it’s also good for the Rotarians and the many volunteers who come out to help us, spread some Christmas cheer, have some fun, (it’s) a good way to launch the holiday season for us.”
Volunteers ranged from Hamilton Police chief Glenn De Caire to members of the fire service, city council, parents, local athletes and McMaster students.
