For the second time in a little more than a year Hamilton’s 911 emergency service went down early Sunday morning. But so far officials don’t know why it happened.

Something similar happened last year, but in that case police say they were conducting a scheduled electrical upgrade. This time the source of the problem is unclear, but luckily it didn’t have an impact when it came to responding to emergency situations in the city.

Hamilton police say they’re working with Bell, their service provider, to figure out the unexplained disruption and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“Immediately at that time we implemented our emergency plan.” said Staff Sergeant Phil Fleming.

Both local police and fire were forced to route calls to Halton police. A backup plan that took about 30 minutes to kick in. So anyone who called 911 during that 30 minutes got a busy signal.

Police say two 911 calls were dropped when their service was interrupted but both of those callers were contacted by police.

No fire calls were missed or dropped. They’re still trying to figure out what exactly happened

“We suspect at this time it is a Bell issue because we did check our technology here, but we are looking to solve the issue, not place any blame at this time.”

Anyone who calls 911 and gets a busy signal can always call the Hamilton police service main line.
