HAPPENING NOW:

Human spirit triumphs

“I am alive! Please rescue me!” Those six words were spoken Friday by a woman who was trapped inside the rubble of the collpased garment factory in Bangladesh…

She had been there for 17 days when rescuers finally heard her cries. The amazing video shows the woman, whose name is Reshma Begum, being pulled from the rubble. Workers had to cut through rods and bricks to reach her. They describe her as being in amazing shape, saying she could even walk after getting some basic nutrition, biscuits and water. She survived all this time because she found a source of water, pooling and drinking what she could from fire hoses, which were used to put out a fire on the site.

Maria Hayes joins us earlier than usual in the show tonight with more on this story. Maria, you spoke with a doctor today about Reshma’s story, and her miraculous survival. Reshma’s survival certainly defies the odds. And at the same time, it’s a testment to the human spirit…
