Closing arguments in murder trial

Final arguments were heard today in the second-degree murder trial of Haiden Suarez Noa. Suarez has admitted to stabbing his girlfriend, Tania Cowell to death in 2013, but his lawyer says he should be found guilty of manslaughter, not murder.

If the prosecution has proven Suarez meant to kill Tania Cowell when he stabbed her in the back and chest and neck, the jury will find him guilty of second degree murder.
If the defense has convinced the jury that Suarez just reacted to mean words from Cowell while he had a knife in his hands, they could find him guilty of manslaughter, which could carry a lesser jail term.

The judge has started instructing the jury on the points of law they need to know to make their decision. He’ll continue those instructions in the morning and then they’ll start their deliberations.
