It’s a very merry first day of the holiday season at Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, as hundreds lined up to experience Christmas, the Victorian way.
Today was the first day to enjoy the historic house for the holidays, complete with costumed interpreters at the home of Sir Allan MacNab and family. The castle is decorated by the Garden Club of Hamilton this year.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item along.
Earlier today CHCH News spoke with one of the interpreters.
“In this Victorian drawing room, a table top behind me, you can see it decorated in traditional fashion, with candles instead of electrical lights, and gifts as well, so all the ornaments would be given out as gifts Christmas morning and even the wealthy would not have wrapped their christmas gifts. So you can see a lot of the gifts on the table, and they would be for the particular individuals, both children and adults here in the home. They would be sort of handed out Christmas morning just like today.” explaine Catharine Schnerr.
The Victorian Christmas display runs until January 3rd. The castle is open from noon until 4pm.
