A caution: the details and images are graphic.

It was a gruesome day for those in court watching the Haiden Suarez-Noa second degree murder trial.

They heard from forensic doctors and investigators who studied the 11 stab wounds on Tania Cowell’s body, and the blood that was spattered during the violence at her apartment in Stoney Creek , and the court had to see that disturbing evidence.

A blood spatter expert testified that most of the blood found in the apartment was in a hallway between the bedroom and bathroom. It was blood that spurted from an artery while Tania Cowell was low or on the ground. They heard that the expert believes Cowell was lifted and moved from that spot to the living room, where she was found in a pool of blood beside the couch and coffee table.

A forensic pathologist testified that 4 of the 11 stab wounds were lethal, including 1 on her neck which sliced her carotid artery and jugular, and another that went through her back, through her rib cage, and into her aorta. Some of the stab wounds used so much force they penetrated the cartilage of her thyroid and the bones of her spine.

Tania Cowell was 36 years old, and at the time had a 5 month old son with Haiden Suarez-Noa. The day after her death, Suarez-Noa turned himself into police saying he had killed his girlfriend. He handed over the baby unharmed.

Also heard in court, the couple had an argument over text message that lasted about 13 hours and led up to her death. She was trying to get Suarez-Noa to do more around the house and eventually invited him home, giving him one last chance to be a better partner. That night she died.

We haven’t heard from the defense yet. This is the crown’s case being presented in court, so although Suarez- Noa’s lawyer is cross-examining crown witnesses, we haven’t heard yet his case for pleading not guilty to second degree murder. The case is moving quickly and we could hear from the defense as early as the beginning of next week.
