Algae bloom in Lake Erie

If you’re looking to beat the heat at a beach this summer you may want to avoid parts of Lake Erie. The west end of the lake near Windsor is seeing severe algae blooms, and it’s moving in this direction.
People in the water today had to tip toe through the algae.

near lake St. Clair. It’s on track to be one of the most severe algae seasons on Lake Erie.
As the lake warms up they expect that giant algae bloom will spread.
The algae bloom will move west to east, and if the predictions are true in the next few weeks the shoreline at Nickel beach will be covered in algae.
This mess is the result of a combination of heat, rain and runoff. With all the rain we’ve had agricultural fertilizers are flowing into Lake Erie, and as the sun and heat warm up the water, the algae flourishes.
Not only does it look disgusting, in high enough concentrations it can kill off fish, but to humans, this type of algae is harmless.
