The city of Hamilton has put out a warning to homeowners, about a number of different flyers offering plumbing service contracts.

The flyers mention two city programs: the protective plumbing program, or three P; and the lead pipe replacement program. The three P program provides grants to homeowners to install backflow prevention valves, to help stop residential sewer backups and flooding.

The lead pipe program offers similar incentives to help homeowners replace aging lead-pipe plumbing, which has been associated with several health risks.

Although the city is mentioned in many of the flyers, city official Shane McCauley tells CHCH News say they don’t endorse or recommend any of the companies involved.

“This is a grant program, we provide the funds and we provide some direction and information, but really when it comes to selecting the contractor… we don’t have a contractor specifically for this program.”

“There are many contractors out there that do the work, some are very good, others like any other contractor you need to be cautious off and do your diligence.”

“Speak directly with the contractors that are providing the quotes so they can get a feel for them, maybe ask for some references as to other work that they’ve done so that they can check up on it.”

While the information on the flyers is correct, and there’s no law to prevent their distribution, city officials don’t want homeowners to be misled into thinking the city of Hamilton is in any way connected to the contractors involved.
