Burlington thanks veterans

The Royal Canadian Legion and the city of Burlington celebrated the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day by thanking local veterans.
The sound of bagpipes rang out in front of City Hall as loved ones lined up to pay tribute to family members who served in World War Two.
It was 70 years ago that the grueling five year war against Nazi Germany and it’s allies officially came to an end. More than 40,000 Canadians died and another 8,000 were captured as prisoners of war. Veterans names were read out and their pictures displayed by their loved ones.
Denise Davy paid tribute to her dad Ken. The 88 year old enlisted in the navy in 1943, when he was only 16 years old. He was awarded the Medal of the Battle of the Atlantic Star and the Canadian volunteer service medal. ” I’m proud of my dad every day. Growing up with him he was such a great dad, but it was important for me to be here with him today and honour him,” Denise Davy said.
The Legion Colour Card performed the march of the flags and some cadets were also on hand.
