Investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office spent the day sifting through the debris of an explosion that completely levelled a house in Scarborough on Monday, and left one man dead. Determining what happened will be a slow process, and investigators say it could be some time before have any answers about the deadly blast. Investigators are removing debris layer by layer. They have more than 5 feet to dig through, after a massive explosion levelled the two storey house Monday afternoon. They’re looking for clues to figure out what caused the blast, and aren’t ruling anything out

“We will be looking for any type of material that may relate to this explosion – either of a criminal nature or an accidental nature” said Wayne Romaine from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office. They know the explosion was gas-related, but still don’t know the source. “We will be able to look at the delivery system – the hot water tank and any appliances to see whether there has been any tampering.” They are searching through debris with the help of backhoes and sorting it into those dumpsters, but say its a long and slow process. “We are taking that debris down in stages of a foot to two feet at a time removing it and examining it.”

The blast killed 57 year old Paul Zigomanis, who was known to police. It damaged at least 40 houses. The one next door was damaged so badly it will have to be torn down, and is a safety concern for crews working there.
