A teenager is fighting for her life in hospital tonight after she was hit by a car whose driver took off. It happened in Fonthill just after 2:00 Friday morning. Police have found the car and have taken two people in for questioning.
The teen was walking with a group of friends along Canboro Road near Church Hill in Fonthill, when a car came up behind them, slamming into the girl and hitting another teenager. The critically injured girl was thrown a few metres – the car sped off in the direction of Fenwick.
“Any occupants in that vehicle would be aware they had struck somebody. There’s a significant amount of damage to the leading edge of the vehicle, as well as the windshield of the vehicle” said Detective Adam Carter of the Niagara Regional Police.
There was a trail of debris and car parts, including pieces of a windshield. Hours later, working on a tip provided by a good samaritan, police found a smashed car they believe was involved in the hit and run. It was parked at an apartment complex in Fenwick.
“We attended at an apartment associated with the parking spot where the vehicle was, and as a result two people were taken into custody.”
The car, a Toyota convertible was put up on a flatbed and taken to a police garage. Meanwhile, the roadway between Haist and Church hill was closed for hours while police reconstructed the scene.
The injured girl is in the intensive care unit.
