For the first time in many years, Good Friday and the beginning of Jewish Passover have fallen on the same day. The eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover began at sundown and starts with a ritual feast that involves multiple generations of a family.

In Meir Kaidar’s Jewish deli in Westdale you can find what’s needed for a Passover meal. The eight-day festival begins at sunset with families gathering for a ceremonial dinner, known as the Seder. “Passover is basically celebrating the freedom of the Jewish people from slavery to freedom.”

During the meal, they read from a book called The Haggadah. “We will be telling the story of the exodus of Egypt and there is a booklet called the Haggadah of passover. Haggadah is story”

The day is spent preparing the food. And while traditions may vary from family to family, “it’s a good reason to get together. It’s wonderful. I love it, it’s one of my favourite holidays” says Devora Weinberger, who is celebrating with her family. “Nobody, even my husband, doesn’t work. Everyone is home. This is the day we are all going to be together.”

Passover continues until sundown on April 11th.
