The family of a 20-year old man who killed himself in the psychiatric unit of Brampton Civic Hospital has filed a $12.5 million wrongful death lawsuit.
Prashant Tiwari was supposed to be under close observation when he took his own life. His family says someone was supposed to check on him every 15 minutes, but instead, he was left alone for over two hours.
Tiwari’s body was found later in the hospital washroom.
Ontario’s Coroner’s office refused to order an inquest into the death, but the Tiwari family has asked that it reconsider.
Brother Gautam said, “Just the fact that we’re still unaware how he died is makes it harder to cope, harder to deal with because not only do we have to think about my brother dying, we have to think how did this happen?”
“Constantly, with no decent answer, and I doubt if we ever get an answer it will ever be enough.”
The William Osler Health System says there have been no other deaths at the mental health unit at Brampton Civic Hospital since it opened in 2007.
