Niagara police are hunting for a man who tried to drag a young woman into his car last night. The attempted abduction happened near downtown St. Catharines. The young woman was shaken up by the ordeal, but wasn’t seriously hurt.

Just after nine last night, a 20 year old woman was walking eastbound on Division Street near Riordan when a man in a smaller, tan, four-door car pulled up and blocked the woman’s path on the sidewalk near an apartment building.

He then opened the door and got out of the driver’s seat.

The male approached her and took hold of her and tried to drag her towards that vehicle and a short struggle ensured–she was able to get away uninjured.

The woman then ran to a nearby home and banged on the door. She told the person who answered the door what happened and they called the police.

Meanwhile, the man who grabbed the woman fled in his car. He turned right on Calvin Street heading toward gale crescent.

The man is in his 50’s. He has an olive complexion and is average height with a thin face and slender build.
He has short receding grey hair, a neatly trimmed grey moustache and spoke with a possible middle eastern accent.

Police have been searching for the car and the attempted abductor since the incident.

Women in the neighbourhood are nervous.

“I’ve only lived here for a few weeks. I’ve heard of things going down on Division Street, I just didn’t expect anything like this.”

Police are advising residents to be more aware of what’s going on around them.
