Extreme cold warning

An extreme cold weather warning is in effect, with temperatures hitting the minus 30 range. And with the freezing temperatures showing no signs of improving, homeless shelters across the city are preparing.
“Up until fairly recently we were operating at a comfortable level, about 75%, but now with the arrival of the cold weather, we are now at over capacity.” Alan Whittle, Good Shepherd Centre. But no one is turned away when the extreme cold hits.
For those looking for more of a temparary solution, the Macnab transit terminal is open right until HSR service ends for people to come in and out of the cold. The Salvation Army truck will also be out serving coffee, hot chocolate, soup, sandwiches to those living on the streets. They’re also stocked with sweaters, hats and gloves.
“In Toronto last year there were several people that passed away because of people being out in the cold. We don’t want that in Hamilton, we want them inside.” Dan Millar, Salvation Army.
City run recreation facilities are open during regular business hours for warmth.
