Delta High School time capsule opened after 50 years

It was a trip down memory lane Friday as the contents of a time capsule were shared in Hamilton.

1967 was a good year. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley cup, the Ticats brought home the Grey Cup and The Doors dominated the air waves. And in 1967, 50 years ago to this date, the seniors at Delta High School buried a time capsule.

Friday it was symbolically dug up in front of hundreds of people.

“It was very exciting. It was lovely to come back and see all of our classmates and how they’ve aged and how well they’ve done and just to be back at Delta.”

The real capsule was dug up a few days ago because it was a time consuming and challenging task. Unfortunately the capsule had water in it, and some of the contents were lost. but hundreds of items still remain, enough to bring back many memories.

There were several letters in the capsule from students who tried to predict what the year 2017 was going to be like.

“We talked about the year 2000 coming up back then and we thought there were going to be flying cars.”

One man got back 2 pennies he put into the time capsule in 1967. The pennies are 200 and 150 years old today. He wrote a letter with the pennies saying that they were to be delivered to his heirs.

Many of the graduates of the class of 1967 say looking at these artifacts is much more than just a trip down memory lane.

“It’s interesting to see what people thought was important.”

Many say this was was a great farewell to the school as it will be shut down in the near future.
