Bad cosmetics leads to arrest

Updated A warning tonight from police, after a Newmarket woman has been arrested for selling dangerous cosmetic injections online.

Clients were paying thousands of dollars in cash to get everything from butt injections, to botox to muscle fillers.

Toronto police have charged Marilyn Ely Reid, 46, with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. She goes by the name Ellie or Ella.

Police say cosmetic injections were advertised on a website. Interested clients would then receive injections at their home or at a hotel.

Officers began investigating after a 28-year old woman paid for and received several injections of polymethylmethacrylate – also known as PMMA – in August. Detective Louise Farrugia says the woman got sick and was taken to hospital.

“As a result she has received debilitating injuries and she is expected to do better in the future but for the time being she is suffering.”

The victim can not walk or sit on her back side and is in a lot of pain.

Police say the accused is not a doctor and not qualified to be giving these kind of injections. PMMA is an augmentation drug that is neither illegal nor regulated, and is used by surgeons for bone reconstruction.

Police want anyone who received injections through the PMMA injections website to seek professional medical help.
