An unattended cooking fire has caused roughly $375,000 in damages to a home in Hamilton’s east end.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the house on Craigroyston Rd. around 5:30 p.m on Sunday.

It was too hot for crews to battle the fire from inside the home and they were forced to take a defensive approach.

Firefighters cut through the roof to allow heat and smoke to escape from the home before they could go inside.

It took about an hour to get the blaze under control.

No one was injured in the fire. The Red Cross helped two people who live at the home find a place to stay for the night.
