The family of a man killed in a deadly shootout at a community barbecue in Toronto four years ago says it’s a relief that the person who started the gunfire is facing a life sentence.
Folorunso Owusu was only 17 at the time of the barbecue. He’s been convicted of two counts of second-degree murder for starting the shootout in 2012 on Danzig Street.
The court heard Owusu came to the party armed, knowing members of a rival gang would be there and fired. That instigated a shootout that killed 23-year-old Joshua Yasay and 14-year-old Shyanne Charles.
Even though he didn’t fire the bullets that killed the two, the judge says Owusu is responsible for the murders, because he was involved in a dangerous act that led to their deaths.
