A Niagara Falls man is being hailed a hero after rescuing a cat that was thrown from a moving car onto a busy highway. The cat, which has been named Ellie is recovering at Huntington animal hospital in St.Catharines.
Steven Ellis was the one who spotted the cat being thrown from a vehicle onto a busy Highway 406. “It didn’t look like garbage, it didn’t look…you know it looked suspicious.”
Ellis was driving on the southbound lanes near Beaverdams road before 9 when it happened. He says he was about a football field length away when he spotted the cat in the air and is shocked no one else stopped to help. He pulled onto the side of the highway and backed up until he found the cat. The Lincoln County Humane Society picked her up. They named the feline in honour of Ellis.
Ellie is doing well but still in shock and under heavy pain medication. She had the skin separated from her jaw and a few toes and a nail ripped out and she will require surgery for that. The Humane Society is looking for the driver of a grey, 2010 Nissan van or crossover which Ellis says he saw. Executive director Kevin Strooband of the Lincoln Humane Society says the driver could face animal cruelty charges.
The cat had no collar or microchip but the Humane Society says the cat is most likely a house cat and is appealing to anyone who may recognize it to call them.
