After wrapping a performance inside Hamilton Theatre Inc. on Friday night, Riane Leonard noticed a stream of notifications coming into the theatre’s twitter account.
At first, she was excited that people were talking about the show but when the social media manager looked at one of the tweets, “it said something like, I’m never supporting the theatre again,” Leonard told CHCH News.
Panicked about what had “gone wrong in the show”, she started searching online and soon found that the Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’ had been stirring up some controversy for a speech the cast delivered to Donald Trump’s running mate Mike Pence at a show he attended on Friday night.

Hundreds of upset American’s mistakenly directed their outrage toward @HamiltonTheatre, the twitter handle of the city of Hamilton’s oldest Musical theatre and not the official Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’ account, @HamiltonMusical.
Leonard says she initially held off responding to the tweets because she didn’t want to get into a continuous “back-and-forth” but eventually began correcting a few about their mistake.
Once people started noticing the error, tweets of support for the local theatre began pouring in. “I’ve just been overwhelmed by all the positive things that have come from this,” said Leonard.
Their Twitter account has seen an exponential increase in followers with some suggesting people donate to the local theatre in the wake of all the confusion.
Leonard says she doesn’t know if any donations have been made yet but it is definitely something the theatre would greatly appreciate. “Our building is old and needs a lot of love and care. It would help us to continue to have a home,” she said.
When asked if the local theatre has any hopes of bringing the popular Broadway show ‘Hamilton’ to their stage, Leonard says, “If the rights were to ever become available! They are long sold out. They will be frozen for a long time but if it was ever an option we’d love to.”
