Arcelor Mittal Dofasco is getting an additional $30 million dollar boost to build energy saving generators. The new technology is expected to save much electricity as it takes to power 19 000 homes. It’s part of Ontario’s initiative to get businesses to reduce energy usage.

This and other upgrades are expected to generate annual savings of about 8% of Dofasco’s current energy use. The province says this will reduce costs for not only Dofasco, but for all hydro users.

“By seeing significant reductions like we’re seeing today, that means our entire system will actually see a savings, that drives down prices for everyone.” Glenn Thibeault, Minister of Energy.

This isn’t the first energy saving project for the steelmaker. Earlier this year, the company used $10 million from tax payers to install a steam turbine generator, which produces steam to generate electricity. It’s expected to save Dofasco 49 000 mega watts in annual energy. By the end of 2018, both projects combined are expected to not only reduce energy usage at Dofasco, but will also create 80 jobs.

But it’s not all optimism, both Dofasco and the province are taking a wait and see approach to Trump’s presidential win in the U.S.
