The Winter Festival of Lights

The Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls is expected to be bigger and brighter this year. One of the newest additions is a 3D wolly mammoth at Dufferin islands. There will be 400 000 lights on the island alone.

“We will do a flip the switch where we illuminate the 2 million lights and then fireworks over the majestic falls and that will be choreographed to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.” Tina Myers, organizer.

Organizers say the festival costs about $1.5 million to put together and draws about the same number in visitors. Last year crews lit up the Toronto Power Generating station, this year they’re adding the former Rankine Generating station. The building started generating electricity in 1905. At that time it was the most advanced hydroelectric station in the world. After producing electricity for over 100 years the powerhouse closed its doors in 2009 and was handed over to the Niagara Parks Commission. The future of the building is still up in the air, but organizers plan on brightening up the vacant building by adding about 50 lights during the festival.

The festival stretches over 8 kilometres and includes the Niagara Parkway and the Fallsview and Lundy’s Lane neighbourhoods. It runs from November 19th to the end of January
